Strattera (Atomoxetine)
Strattera (Atmoxetine) is a Selective Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor approved for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In the clinical trials Strattera failed as an antidepressant, and instead was marketed as a non-stimulant treatment for ADHD. Although Strattera was in the same class as Effexor that was not recommended for children due to the risk of suicide, Strattera became the fastest growing ADHD drug and captured a 16% of the market share within 9 months. It is estimated that nearly one million children were prescribed Strattera in 2003. In September 2005 the FDA found that Strattera may prompt suicidal thoughts in children and the black box warning was required.
