Coaxil

(Tianeptine, Stablon)

COAXIL is structurally related to tricyclic antidepressants but has a distinct mechanism of action. Rather than inhibiting the reuptake of Serotonin, Stablon enhances Serotonin concentrations while also altering the Glutamate receptor activity. Glutamate is the most abundant excitatory neurotransmitter in the nervous system involved in cognitive functions such as learning and memory, but it also the precursor of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, which regulates excitability and is directly responsible for muscle tone. Serotonin modulates anger, aggression, body temperature, mood sleep, sexuality, appetite and metabolism.

The onset of action with COAXIL is much faster than SSRIs. The side effects can include: disturbances of the gut region such as nausea, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting or indigestion, dry mouth, fatigue, insomnia, loss of appetite, anxiety, dizziness, respiratory discomfort, sleepiness, tremor, blurred vision, increased sweating, itching, tightness of the throat, feeling of weakness, decreased sex drive and headaches.

Because COAXIL can influence numerous systems of the body and brain, stoppingabruptly can cause what is termed a discontinuation syndrome.  Gradual dose reduction (also known as tapering), is recommended to help the body and brain during the withdrawal.
