What is Desvenlafaxine? (Pristiq)
Pristiq (Desvenlafaxine) is an antidepressant of the Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor class and is the synthetic form of the major active metabolite of Effexor (Venlafaxine), and is being targeted as the first non-hormonal treatment for menopause. Effexor lost its patent protection in August 2006 and Pristiq was approved In January 2007. In the European Union, Desvenlafaxine has not been approved for any use. The Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use stated the effectiveness had not been shown convincingly. Pristiq has been implicated with higher rates of withdrawals (discontinuation syndrome) than other SSRI and SNRI antidepressant medications due to its relatively short half-life. The manufacture states discontinuation symptoms may occur, especially when therapy is stopped suddenly.
