Dormicum (Versed, Hypnovel, Midazolam)

    Versed (Dormicum) is a short-acting benzodiazepine that has extremely potent anti-anxiety, amnestic, hypnotic, anticonvulsant, skeletal muscle relaxant and sedative properties. Paradoxical effects (opposite) can occur and are most common in children and the elderly.  Alprazolam (Xanax) was synthesized from Midazolam in 1976. Benzodiazepine dependence occurs in one-third of individuals treated for more than 2-4 weeks causing a tolerance to the existing dose and higher doses to create similar effects.  Withdrawal symptoms can occur if the dose is reduced too rapidly.  A gradual taper is recommended.
