What is Elavil? (Amitriptyline, Endep, Tryptizol, Laroxyl)
Amitriptyline (Elavil) is the most widely prescribed Triyclic Antidepressant and is prescribed for depression, anxiety, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, migraines, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, neuralgia and insomnia. It should be gradually withdrawn over at least three months. Because Amitriptyline blocks the nurotransmitter Acetylcholine in the central and peripheral nervous system there are numerous side effects. It acts primarily as a Serotonin Norephinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor and was approved by the FDA in 1961 for the treatment of major depression. However, the British National Formulary notes that Amitriptyline is particularly dangerous in overdose and therefore does not recoomend its use for depression.
