What is Lamictal (Lamotrigine)?

Lamictal is an anticonvulsant drug used in the treatment of bipolar, epilepsy and off-label for depression. Lamictal is a member of the sodium channel blocking class of antiepileptic drugs and decreases Glutamate release, although it is chemically unrelated to other anticonvulsants.

There are many side effects associated with Lamictal and the prescribing information includes a black box warning about life-threatening skin reactions. Patients are warned to seek immediate medical treatment for any unexpected skin rash, as it may be an indication of a possible serious or even deadly side effect called toxic epidermal necrolysis.  Additionally, Lamictal binds to melanin-containing (pigment) tissues such as the iris of the eye. Long-term consequences of this are unknown at this time. Approximately 7% of patients experience insomnia from Lamictal.

Due to the risk of seizure and other serious withdrawal symptoms, it is important to withdraw Lamictal slowly.
