Molipaxin
(Desyrel Trazodone, Trittico, Thombran, Trialodine)
MOLIPAXIN is an SARI (Serotonin Antagonist and Reuptake Inhibitor) antidepressant often prescribed for insomnia because it has both anti-anxiety and hypnotic qualities. It works by preventing Serotonin from naturally circulating throughout the body and forces the levels higher in the brain. Trazodone also increases the concentration of Norepinephrine. Serotonin helps regulate mood, appetite, sleep and emotion while Norepinephrine is required for energy in times of stress. Both Serotonin and Norepinephrine stimulate nerve cells and to a lesser extent, block the action of Acetycholine.
Acetycholine activates muscles, and the blocking action of Trazodone may explain the muscle weakness many patients experience. Acetylcholine also plays an important role in the enhancement of sensory perceptions when we wake up as well as sustaining attention. This may explain the troubling side effects of excessive drowsiness, lack of mental and physical alertness.
Trazodone may increase heart rate and also place more stress on the heart. This can be dangerous for patients with cardiovascular disease, particularly for anyone who has had a cardiac event (heart attack). Anyone taking Trazodone should be monitored closely for cardian rhythm disturbances and signs of cardiac stress or damage.
Trazodone is classified as an atypical antidepressant, but it shares many of the properties of Tricyclic Antidepressants. It also shares some of the properties of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs).
Warnings
Trazodone has been associated with the occurrence of priapism, a potentially harmful and painful condition where the penis or clitoris will not return to its flaccid state. In approximately 33% of the reported cases surgical intervention was required, with a portion experiencing permanent impairment of erectile function. Male patients with prolonged erections should immediately consult their physician or emergency room.
