What is Paxil? (Paroxetine, Seroxat, Sereupin, Aropax, Deroxat, Divarius, Rexetin, Xetanor, Paroxat, Loxamine)

Paxil is a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) that entered the U.S. market in 1992. Although GlaxoSmithKline specifically advertised the drug as “not habit forming,” the World Health Organization ranked Paxil as the most difficult antidepressant to withdraw from. Thousands have sued both in the U.S. and the U.K., alleging the drug has serious side effects that were downplayed in patient information. GSK now acknowledges a discontinuation syndrome, including serious symptoms. In 2004 Paxil had over $1 billion in sales. Due to the high occurrence of discontinuation symptoms that can occur with an interruption of treatment or a too rapid withdrawal, a slow taper is strongly recommended.
