Restoril is a short to intermediate acting benzodiazepine that is a powerful hypnotic prescribed for the short-term treatment of insomnia. It was first synthesized in Europe in 1964 and was marketed in Europe until the FDA approved Restoril in 1981 for the U.S. market. By the late 1980s it was one of the most prescribed hypnotics on the market. East Germany and the Soviet Union used Restoril as a truth serum, but it made the subject too sleeping or rendered them incoherent. Instead, the drug was used to keep political dissidents housed and in a constant vegetative state in Soviet asylums. Physical dependence to Restoril carries the same concern as with all benzodiazepines, and the withdrawal syndrome can be extremely challenging. Therefore a slow taper is recommended to minimize symptoms.
