TEMAZEPAM is a powerful hypnotic benzodiazepine that has strong sedative, amnesic (memory disturbance) and motor impairing properties. In addition, TEMAZEPAM also has anti-anxiety, anticonvulsant and skeletal muscle relaxant qualities. TEMAZEPAM is an intermediate acting benzodiazepine and therefore acts quickly to induce sleep. However, TEMAZEPAM also alters the sleep architecture by reducing the amounts of restorative Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep and increasing the non-restorative sleep patterns. This can result in daytime drowsiness and poor cognitive function. TEMAZEPAM also depresses the tone of respiratory muscles, leading to sleep apnea. Tolerance to the sleep inducing properties of TEMAZEPAM develops within a matter of days, and after six days of use, performance-impairing effects occur. Therefore only short-term use of TEMAZEPAM is recommended.
