Tofranil (Imipramine, Janimine, Praminil)
Imipramine (Tofranil) is a tricyclic antidepressant that was developed in the last 1950s by Ciba-Geigy that is mainly used for major depression and for the inability to control urination. Although Imipramine showed success in treating depression, it also caused a high rate of manic and hypomanic reactions. Imipramine served as a prototypical drug for the development of the later-released tricyclics. The concern of a discontinuation syndrome applies to Imipramine as it does all antidepressants. Tapering is recommended to minimize symptoms.
