What is Zopiclone?

(Lunesta, Imovane, Zimovan, Eszopiclone)

    Lunesta (Zopiclone) resembles benzodiazepines with similar side effects and risks, although they have dissimilar chemical structures. Imovane is known as a Z-drug, which was thought to be less addictive or habit-forming than benzodiazepines. However, this appraisal is proving to be inaccurate, as documented cases of addiction have surfaced. Imovane works by depressing the central nervous system, and after continuous use (longer than 10-14 days) adaptations occur. Reducing Imovane too rapidly or stopping the drug can result in rebound withdrawal symptoms that are also seen in benzodiazepine withdrawal. According to the World Health Organization, Imovane binds with high affinity to the same sites that the benzodiazepine class of drugs do. A gradual taper is recommended.
