What is Zyban? (Bupropion, Wellbutrin)
Zyban (Bupropion) is an atypical antidepressant with pharmacological action as a Norepinephrine Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitor. Wellbutrin belongs to the chemical class of aminoketones and is similar in structure to some stimulants. This may explain why agitation and anxiety can increase in some patients, particularly at higher doses. It has also been approved as a smoking cessation aid. In 2007, Wellbutrin was the fourth-most prescribed antidepressant in the United States. Wellbutrin lowers the seizure threshold and its potential to cause seizures has been documented. This controversial side effect was responsible for its initial withdrawal from the market, but was found to be largely dose-dependent and approved. Abrupt discontinuation may result in withdrawal symptoms yet the manufacturer recommends dose tapering only if Wellbutrin was prescribed for Seasonal Affective Disorder and is not required if used as a smoking cessation treatment.
